D.C. United acquires Markus Halsti

Finnish international joins Black-and-Red after seven seasons with Malmö FF

D.C. United today announced that the club has signed Finnish international and Malmö FF midfielder/defender Markus Halsti. Per club and League policy, exact terms of the deal were not disclosed. Halsti will be officially added to the roster following receipt of his International Transfer Certificate, P-1 and full medical clearance.

Halsti, 30, has spent the last seven seasons with Malmö FF in the Allsvenskan, the top Swedish division, appearing in 115 games and scoring six goals. He helped Malmö to three league championships in the last five seasons, the first 2010 before consecutive titles in 2013 and 2014. In 2014, he was named to the Allsvenskan Team of the Year. Halsti began his professional career in 2003 with Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi (HJK) of Veikkausliiga, the premier division of Finnish football, where he appeared in 77 games and recorded three goals over five seasons. In total, the Finnish international has appeared in 20 Champion’s League games during his club career.

"We are pleased to be adding a player with solid European playing experience at the Club, Champions League, and National Team levels,” said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. “Markus can play as both a central midfielder and central defender, and this was quite attractive to us. He is a tough competitor and another very good character piece for our club. We look forward to having him join our family.”

Internationally, Halsti has represented the Finland national team 20 times since his debut in 2008. He also has experience as a member of Finland's U21 National Team, appearing in 15 games.

Markus Halsti siirtyi siis Yhdysvaltoihin D.C. Unitedin riveihin.

Yhdeksi seurakaveriksi Halsti saa muun muassa joukkueen suurimman tähden Eddie Johnsonin.

DCU on voittanut kyseisen Mestareiden Liigan kertaalleen historiansa aikana vuonna 1998.

D.C. Unitedin palkintokaappiin kuuluu siis kaikki mahdollinen, mitä seura on voinut voittaa.

Q&A: Markus Halsti joins D.C. United

"I am a positive, honest and demanding Finnish guy," Halsti.

Markus-Halsti.jpg

Today, Markus Halsti joined D.C. United's 2015 squad. Dcunited.com caught up with the experienced Finnish International to find out what he was most excited for, what qualities he will bring to the roster and how he is feeling about his move to the States.

You've played in Sweden for seven years, and now you're coming over to the US. How are you feeling about the change?
Markus Halsti: I'm feeling great and excited about coming to play for D.C. United. Of course, it was emotional for me to leave Malmö after 7 years, but I'll do everything with D.C. United to achieve as much here as I did there.

Outside of soccer, what are you most looking forward to about your move to the States?
MH: First of all, that we, as a family, have a good place to live and that we can enjoy our time together in an interesting city, that was one of the reasons why I chose DC. To experience a totally new continent, new culture and new cities is something that I am really looking forward to. Probably in the beginning it feels quite strange to walk in the streets of the city, seeing all the buildings that we have seen on TV on the other side of the world.

You're an experienced player, coming to D.C. United with three championships in the last four years. What qualities will you add to the roster?

MH: I think I can bring a lot of leadership and a winning mentality, even though the team has it, proving that in winning the conference last season. Then of course, as I can play different positions, I can be a useful player for the manager. Lastly, I'm a player with big heart, with a good passing foot and who can read the game.

What made MLS, specifically D.C. United, appealing to you?
MH: After talking with Ben [Olsen] and Dave [Kasper], I got a really good feeling about the team and the whole organization. Then after checking around about the city, we decided that this feels like the best option for me and for our family. The League is getting better all the time, so that of course helped to make the decision. Also that the team has already qualified to the quarter-finals in the CONCACAF Champions League played a big role. As I played last year in the UEFA's Champions League, I know how special those kind of games are.

For our fans in D.C., what should they look forward to both on and off the field?
MH: A team player who always gives everything for the teammates and for the fans. I am a positive, honest and demanding Finnish guy. Sometimes maybe a little bit too honest, especially if I haven't played well.

By the way, I want to thank everybody who welcomed me to D.C. United in Twitter.

Markus Halsti on selventänyt rooliaan maajoukkueen suhteen.

Halsti aloittaa MLS-kauden maaliskuussa ottelulla 07/03/2015: D.C. United - 22:00 - Montreal Impact.

D.C. United starting XI going into MLS preseason

usa-today-8200551.0.jpg

D.C. United starts training camp tomorrow, and so we will take a look at their projected starting XI.

Long-time readers of the site know that, throughout the season, we try to predict what lineup Ben Olsen will use for that week's game. In that spirit, and to mark the beginning of training camp, here is the team that I think will start the CONCACAF Champions League game against L.D. Alajuelense. We will go through this process throughout the preseason, as we actually get to see Olsen mixing and matching players, what his preferences are, when players are signed or traded, and how these players start to perform.

D.C. United (4-4-2)

Espindola - Silva

Rolfe - Kitchen - Halsti - DeLeon

Kemp - Birnbaum - Boswell © - Franklin

Hamid

Obviously, the most controversial spot is benching Davy Arnaud in favor of Markus Halsti. It will be a tough road for Halsti to try and beat out Arnaud is just over a month's time, but I think that his pedigree as a UEFA Champions League starting central midfielder will help him win out. If he cannot do it by the end of February, I would hope that he would be starting by the beginning of April. Arnaud has experience throughout the midfield and as a second striker, and that versatility off of the bench could make him the new Standard.

Otherwise, the team should look very familiar as it is the same as the one that was successful down the stretch of 2014. Bill Hamid will start in goal, with the defense of Sean FranklinBobby BoswellSteve Birnbaum, and Taylor Kemp in front of him. Alongside Halsti will be Perry Kitchen, with Chris Rolfe and Nick DeLeon on the wings. Fabian Espindola will likely play every minute of CCL play since he is suspended for MLS play, and alongside him will be Luis Silva.

United has not been too active in acquiring players, but they have significantly improved their depth going into this year. With these starters, the substitutes would be Andrew DykstraChris KorbKofi Opare, Davy ArnaudChris PontiusEddie Johnson, and Jairo Arrieta.

The Washington Post on kirjoittanut artikkelin Markuksesta:

Markus Halsti: D.C. United’s Finnish product

s6m4x1.jpg

Markus Halsti, in action Friday at the ATX Pro Challenge in Austin.

D.C. United first took interest in Finnish defender-midfielder Markus Halsti about four years ago. The timing, though, was way off. Stalled by injuries, he had yet to make a lasting mark with Malmö, Sweden’s most decorated club. And MLS was an uncertain proposition for Europeans in the prime of their careers.

“If I leave Malmö, I haven’t done what I came to do,” Halsti said Saturday from United preseason camp. “I came to win a championship and become a better player. I didn’t feel I was ready to go. It felt wrong.”

This winter, it felt right. His contract had expired. He had won three league titles and tested himself against Europe’s best in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League

A new adventure beckoned.

“One week I am in Helsinki,” he said, “the next week I am walking past the White House.”

Halsti, 30, has come for more than the sightseeing. He has come to reinforce a squad seeking to replicate last year’s first-place finish in MLS’s Eastern Conference and continue advancing in the region’s premier international competition, the CONCACAF Champions League.

Halsti and United are in the late stages of preparations for the tournament quarterfinals against Alajuelense, starting Feb. 26 in Alajuela.

United is counting on his experience, with not only Malmo but the Finnish national team. He has represented his country since 2008 and received regular call-ups for four years, serving in qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup and 2012 and ‘16 European Championship. His next assignment is a Euro qualifier March 29 against Northern Ireland, forcing him to miss the Los Angeles Galaxy’s visit to RFK Stadium the previous day.

Aside from Halsti’s knowhow, United was drawn to his versatility as both a center back and deep-lying midfielder for both Malmö and Finland. In a pinch, he can also play outside back. Ideally, United Coach Ben Olsen would pair him with Perry Kitchen in midfield, but with Steve Birnbaum nursing a knee injury, Halsti partnered with Bobby Boswell in central defense this weekend.

Off the field, Halsti has bonded quickly with new teammates. He has a witty sense of humor in making observations about America. “In the Metro, there is carpet,” he said. “I had to call my friends in Europe. Everyone has shoes; why do you need carpet?”

D.C. players needle him about his Scandinavian roots, calling him a Viking.

On the road, he is rooming with Chris Rolfe. Both hold back their blonde hair with thin headbands. Both played in Scandinavia (Rolfe in Denmark). In the Champions League last year, Halsti faced wild-maned Andrea Pirlo of Juventus. Pirlo did not use the headband.

“He’s Italian,” he said. “He knows the tricks.”

(His greatest challenge, however, was chasing Andres Iniesta during a World Cup qualifier against Spain in 2013.)

On a day off in Washington, he walked the city for hours and took the Metro to Alexandria to stroll through Old Town Alexandria. “I like to get a feeling for the city.”

Although his only previous U.S. visits were to Florida, Halsti is well-versed in American sports. He is addicted to ESPN’s “30 for 30” documentary series. His favorite: “You Don’t Know Bo,” chronicling multi-sport wonder Bo Jackson.

When the topic of playing MLS expansion team New York City FC at Yankee Stadium was raised, he asked: “Do they still have the Steinbrenner?”

Halsti grew up in east Helsinki running track and playing both soccer and bandy, a hybrid of ice hockey and field hockey played on frozen fields. As a teenager, his focus turned to soccer and, in 2003, he debuted with HJK, Finland’s most successful club. Five years later, he moved to Malmö, situated on the southern tip of Sweden, across the Oresund strait from Copenhagen.

The first few seasons were marked by injuries and irregular playing time. But by 2013, he was a full-time starter. Malmo won consecutive Allsvenskan trophies, increasing its record haul to 21. The Champions League campaign last fall did not go as well: one victory in six group matches against Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Olympiacos.

Aside from United, Halsti said he received offers from clubs in Turkey and England’s second tier. He signed a two-year deal to play in MLS.

Later this month, Halsti’s fiancée, Taina Nyberg, and their 5-month-old daughter will join him in Washington. In Finland, Nyberg is more famous than Halsti; she is a former national TV sports anchor. “When our baby was born, the media say Taina’s name first,” he said with a laugh.

Both are eager to settle in Washington – and Halsti is keen to contribute to a new club.

“If I can play at my same level,” he said, “I think I will do well here.”

Markus Halstin D.C. Unitedin tie jatkuu CONCACAF Champions Leaguessa perjantaina 27. helmikuuta. Vastaan asettuu costaricalainen LD Alajuelense, jota vastaan DCU pelaa ensin vierasottelun ja viikko myöhemmin kotonaan.

Tässä hieman löpinää MLS-joukkueiden taipaleesta Mestareiden Liigassa:

Will this be the year for MLS in CONCACAF Champions League?

Ja hieman katsausta meininkiin seuran puolella:

A Day with D.C. United

Halsti pelasi täydet 90 minuuttia vierasottelussa Portland Timbersia vastaan. Ottelun hävisi D.C. United lukemin 0-1. Halstinho löytyi keskikentän keskustasta.

Halstin sopimus on purettu D.C.

Olisikohan sitten seuraavaksi luvassa paluu Malmö FF:n riveihin?

The very fact of being a leader for the young is something Markus Halsti look forward to.

"In the very first conversation we had with Markus, we talked about his experience that could help young and it was to Markus himself very important and looked like something positive," says Claus Steinlein.

Markus Halsti will occupy positions in both the middle and on the defensive midfielder for FC Midtjylland.

"We will play 15 games in the first eight weeks. There is no one who can keep to play all matches, and therefore we will see Mark play both places. It is also an advantage that he is multifunctional that play multiple positions," says Claus Steinlein.

Midtjylland hävisi Europa Leaguessa kotonaan Osnamlısporille lukemin 0–1, ja juuri alkaneessa ottelussa tavoitteena olisikin sitten vierasvoitto.

Halsti löytyy avauskokoonpanosta, kun taas Sparv sivussa loukkaantumisen vuoksi. Mielenkiintoinen nimi löytyy myös vaihtopenkiltä, nimittäin Rafael van der Vaart.
