Thiago Silva Says He Is Better Than Ever; So Is He?

The captain Thiago Silva is back! We had wondered where the talismanic Brazilian who has been labelled the ‘world’s best defender’ for so many years had got to. And by his own admission, he thinks he is better now, then when he first arrived in Paris. It is certainly a bold claim but is he right?

“I think that I am better now than when I first arrived in Paris. I have progressed but I don’t play alone. The team is strong”.

Those were the words from the skipper after the 3-1 win over Toulouse last Saturday. It was another imperious performance from the 30-year-old and he also managed to get on the scoresheet. His admission though is very interesting. Silva is someone who wears his heart on his sleeve, always has done. So he would not have said this on a whim – he genuinely believes it.

For me, I think back to the Thiago Silva in his debut campaign where he was absolutely outstanding for Paris Saint-Germain. As focal as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was up top, Silva possessed that same calibre in his area. We cannot forget that debut of his against Dynamo Kiev in a 4-1 rout which consisted of some of the best football played under former coach Carlo Ancelotti. Silva made it 2-0 on the night thanks to an assist by former centre-back Alex as the two would go on to form a solid partnership in a title winning season.

2012/13 is the Silva that was at the peak of his power for me but his performances of late are certainly reminiscent of those days. The composure and authority is back in his game. No more jitters, just pure defensive elegance. This is Thiago Silva at his very best.

It was only six weeks ago where he was having questions asked of him. Poor performances against Barcelona, Guingamp and Bastia showed some evident flaws. Not just from him, the team as a whole. But being one of the marquee figures in that dressing room, he was getting much of the criticism.

But since the Coupe de la Ligue win over Saint-Etienne, the tide has turned. 11 straight games without defeat, eight entailing victories, everything is pretty rosy in the garden at the moment. So how has the captain’s league form been then?

Well, in the six games since defeat in Corsica his defensive duties have been impeccable. Out of his 23 tackles, 70% have been successful. He has not committed a single foul, endured six and completed 23 out of 25 headed duels which is a success rate of 92%. In other defensive actions he has made 16 interceptions, 48 clearances and three blocks.

With the ball at his feet he has accumulated a passing accuracy of 92%. 310 passes out of 322 have been on point! It emphasises his credentials as a ball playing centre-back.

The stats make impressive reading and you can see why the player himself is at total ease with his performances. Four of the games he has been partnered with David Luiz and the other two Marquinhos. The display in the Champions League tie with Chelsea demonstrated the possibility to partner TS with Marquinhos and usher Luiz into midfield for the long-term. But, whoever partners the captain these days is playing alongside a defender who has rediscovered his form.

THIAGO SILVA IN 4 ACTS
At the end of a magical, historical season for the club, we asked our champions to look back at the key moments of the 2014-15 season, starting with captain Thiago Silva.

His goal against Chelsea, the crowning moment of a royal evening in London
"I couldn't believe Courtois managed to save the first header. I didn't think he was going to reach it. Then I got another chance from the very next corner. But it was even harder because I was a long way from goal. I just tried to header it towards goal, but as soon as I made contact, I thought it was going to fly over the bar. But it fell just behind Courtois and underneath the crossbar. He's a big 'keeper and I thought it was impossible to lob him, but it went in!"

"It was an incredible night in London and when that final whistle blew. We were very happy, because it's never easy to play in the Champions League with a man sent off. It was a crucial match for us and we played the best possible game that night. There was a lot of quality that night, even if we lost Ibra early on. After Zlatan's sending off, we knew it would be hard to win, but I remained calm. I looked at Blaise who was arguing with Fabregas, and I told him, stay calm, we're going to qualify. David Luiz said the same thing. I think we grew in confidence at that moment and Blaise, with Marco and Thiago Motta, were excellent. Javier Pastore also had a great game. And in the end, we got the result."

The crazy match against Caen finishing with 9 vs 11 (2-2)
"Obviously a match like that makes you think. Even finishing the game with nine players on the pitch, it's not normal to concede two goals in two minutes. It was a bizarre game. We lost three or even four players through injury and the coach had already made the three changes, and then we conceded those two late goals. It makes you think. We spoke about it after the game and everyone know, that if we played like that against a big team in the Champions League for example, we would never reach the quarter-finals. We discussed it all together, and I think that's another reason why we played so well in London against Chelsea."

Papus Camara lifting the Ligue 1 crown
"I thought about a month earlier. Papus told me about his situation and how he was going to retire and that's when I thought about him lifting the trophy if we won the championship. I think it was a normal thing to do, especially for someone like Papus, who is such a nice guy, that everyone respects, even if he didn't get the chance to play too much this season. He always stayed motivated, always pushed the rest of the squad to stay confident. A player like that in the squad is very important. That's why I started to think about doing what I did, because he will never forget that, so I think I did the right thing."

Captain of this history-making side
"It's a big responsibility, and you always have to be at your best. In a big team like Paris, there's a lot of pressure to win all the time. This time, it's hard to do better because we've won every domestic trophy. It's been an incredible season, we've done something that has never been done before. We should all be very proud."

Le Capitaine on tehnyt jatkosopimuksen aina vuoteen 2020. Vähän yllättävä uutinen, mutta sitäkin enemmän tervetullut. Ura loppuun mahdollisesti siis Pariisissa kunnes jättää kentät seuralegendana.

THIAGO SILVA EXTENDS HIS CONTRACT UNTIL 2020
Paris Saint-Germain are delighted to announce the two-year contract extension of their captain Thiago Silva. The Brazilian defender is now linked to the club until 30 June, 2020.

Thiago Silva arrived in Paris in July 2012, and has been a key figure in the club's project since the arrival of Qatar Sports Investments. A world-renowned central defender, the Brazilian is one of the greatest players in the history of Paris Saint-Germain. Captain since the victorious UEFA Champions League trip to Dynamo Kiev (2-0), the Rio de Janeiro native has worn the Red-and-Blue's captain's armband 165 times in 182 matches in all competitions. Only Dominique Bathenay, who captained the side in 220 matches between 1978 and 1985, has led the team more times.

Named Ligue 1's best centre-back four times (2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016), and also included in the FIFA/FIFPro World XI the last three years (2013, 2014, 2015), the Brazil international (60 caps) has won 11 trophies in Paris Saint-Germain's colours: four French championships, two Coupes de France, three Coupes de la Ligue and two Trophées des champions. At 32 years old, the former Fluminense and AC Milan player, recently recalled to the Brazil team, remains the cornerstone of the Paris defence and of a team that he intends to again lead to great things in the seasons to come.

"It's an immense pleasure to extend my contract with Paris Saint-Germain, Thiago Silva said. Here, I have found a marvellous club where I can thrive. I am very proud to be the captain of this team, which has won everything in France in the last two seasons and which has also earned respect from across Europe thanks to its performances in the Champions League. We still have some very big dreams to fulfill. I'm convinced that we'll manage to do that and will continue to make our fans happy."

"I'm very happy with Thiago Silva's contract extension, said Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Paris Saint-Germain CEO and Chairman. He's an extraordinary captain through his reading of the game and his authority on the pitch. Our fans have always appreciated his exemplary combativeness. His presence will continue to help the club improving. Since his arrival, Thiago has made a real mark on Paris Saint-Germain's history. Between PSG and its captain, some great pages remain to be written."
