Aalesunds FK:n erikoistilannespesialisti Sakari Mattila aloittaa toisen kautensa Tippeligaenissa joukkueensa kapteenina.

The coaches in AaFK have selected Sakari Mattila (25) from Tampere in Finland this year captain in AaFK, open Sten Grytebust as vice-captain. And coach Harald Aabrekk hope and believe that the coaches have done a good choice.

 

- "Sakki" and Sten will function as a team, it is our plan. We've tried several players in captain role this year and have thus ended up with these two.

 

- Why Mattila?

 

- He is a man who works very well in our community. He has good social skills and abilities, and he also has big ambitions on its own behalf as a player. He has rich experience playing in Europe, and he is well liked by all the other players. Attitudinal and skill wise he is also on the top shelf, so we want that "Sakki" must be our new commander. And then in bins with Sten says Aabrekk.

 

- What about the language?

 

- He understands perfectly well Norwegian and speak the otherwise English fluently. And in our wardrobe is the English common language. Before battle and during the break we need that everyone understands what is going on, and even though I had an intention to speak Norwegian in the locker room I have had Jenke me there, smiling ÅFK head coach.

 

- I want Sakari and Sten will go ahead as good examples on the pitch and also off the field, and help to make the right decisions for the team's best in the heat of battle. And I think they are ready to take this challenge, says Aabrekk.

Fulham Football Club is delighted to confirm the signing of Sakari Mattila from Aalesunds FK on a two-year deal, with a Club option for a further 12 months, for an undisclosed fee.

 

The 26-year-old defensive midfielder began his career in his native Finland with HJK Helsinki, and made his professional debut with the club’s reserve side, Klubi 04. He soon progressed to the senior side and was given his first top flight run out in April 2008.

 

He was on the move soon after, though, as he made the switch to Serie A after agreeing a deal with Udinese. During his time in Italy, he went on loan to Ascoli, before taking in a similar spell at Swiss outfit AC Bellinzona, for whom he later signed permanently.

 

Mattila returned to Helsinki on loan in August 2012, before rejoining them on a permanent deal just under a year later. In November 2013, it was announced that he had agreed to sign for Norwegian side Aalesunds on a three-year deal, and he was soon appointed captain.

 

He made the first of his appearances for the Finnish national side in March 2014, having previously represented his country for a variety of age groups.

 

Speaking to fulhamfc.com after putting pen to paper, Mattila said: “Of course I’m very delighted and happy to officially be a member of FFC. From day one when I heard about the interest I was looking forward to this moment, and now that it’s official I’m really happy.

 

“I haven’t been training with the team yet but the facilities and the atmosphere that you have here in the Training Ground is very special.”

Paljon on muuttunut siitä, kun Fulham pelasi vuonna 2010 Eurooppa-liigan finaalissa. Paljon on kylläkin myös siitä, kun vielä Valioliigassa pelasivat.

 

Joukkue ei kuitenkaan aivan mikään heikoin ole ja eiköhän FL Championshipin keskikastista löydy paikka tälläkin kaudella vähintään. Tällaisten nimien kanssa kuitenkin pääsee Mattila kilpailemaan peliajasta:

Fulham have announced that Sakari Mattila’s contract has been terminated by mutual consent.

 

The Finland international joined last summer and made nine appearances last season.

Kuten Kaukon kohdalla, niin Mattilankaan siirto Fulhamiin ei aivan onnistunut.

 

Molemmat ovat kuitenkin suhteellisen samanlaisessa tilanteessa, sillä Mattilakin on murtautunut SønderjyskE:n avauskokoonpanoon, ja seura pelaa siis myös Tanskan pääsarjassa, jossa suomalaisia tuntuu nykyään riittävän mukavasti. Varsinaiseksi avauskokoonpanon pelaajaksi en välttämättä vielä kutsuisi, sillä alkukaudesta vastuuta tuli lähinnä vaihtopenkiltä ja vasta lähemmäksi tätä hetkeä sai suurempia minuutteja muun muassa Københavnia ja Nordsjællandia vastaan. Tuo pelipaikka on kuitenkin aivan täysin otettavissa, sillä seuran pelaajistosta ei hirveästi leveyttä löydy. Mattilan rinnalla avauskokoonpanossa keskikentän keskustassa pelaa Madsen ja oikeastaan ainoa kilpailija näille kahdelle on vaihtopenkiltä Rømer.
